The Hero's Journey for Young Men
The Hero’s Journey for Young Men
We invite you on a heroic journey;
into the wild with us;
into the wilderness of your own heart;
into your most vital and true self;
the living treasure of who you really are;
the treasure of your unique gift to the world.
What is a Young Men’s Journey Intensive?
A Hero's Journey for men age 14-16 and 17-22, is a specially designed process in which each participant enters an ageless and timeless initiation into the transformative currents of personal maturing as well as planetary evolution. It calls you to leave behind the familiar horizons of home and peer group interactions, and venture forth on a journey into a vital truth about yourself that awaits you in the unknown. It calls you to the adventure of discovering more about the one true life waiting for your full attention.
We follow the mythic map of the hero’s journey that has guided the youth within every culture and tradition since the beginning of time, and supports young men who seek a meaningful experience that will enliven their existence today.
There is a place inside each young man’s heart, which longs to be recognized, to be seen and respected by his peers, and to be seen and appreciated by older men.
You will be joined by other men of your generation from various walks of life who are seeking a life-altering adventure to support them through a significant transition in their relationship to their own personal lives and way of being in the world.
We strongly believe that every individual is unique and is destined to learn how to live their unique life expression in the world. It is vitally important to us that your journey into the individuality of your own nature is done in a way that integrates, rather than separates you from the other people in your life.
Even though much of your time on the Hero’s Journey Intensive will be spent with your fellow peers, you will also be journeying alongside men of all ages, some of whom old enough to be your grandfather. You will see that the journey into the fullness of manhood is never complete. But you will also see that there are stages of the journey that one can rest confidently within. You will offer the courage and vision of your own journey, and you will also receive courage, strength and wisdom from older men who have no designs on you except that you find your true way with your own true life.
For quite some time now, you may have been getting messages from the people and culture around you on what a man is supposed to look like. Or, who you are expected to be. How does that feel? Does it fit your own sense of who you are?
If you were asked to design a vision for the way the world might be, and a role or contribution you could make to creating the world of your dreams, what might that be?
Does the life you are living give you hope for your future and the future of the world? Would you like support in crafting a life that you feel is worth living—one that draws on your strengths and interests—and one that develops the necessary self-esteem, confidence and ability to relate well with others of differing opinion?
Are you ready for an exciting physical adventure that invites you to be the hero of your own life?
What to Expect...
A week’s adventure that will likely be remembered for a lifetime. A week is not a long time in the course of a life, yet we have the advantage of engaging in an intensity and focus that doesn’t apply to most areas of your life.
We will spend a lot of time outdoors, exploring the forests, mountains, caves and wide open fields of one of the most beautiful and wild areas of the Appalachian mountains. Primitive living skills will be taught to build confidence in outdoor survival, but also for the sheer enjoyment of it. Learning how to build a fire, for example, without matches and spending a night, perhaps, feeding that fire as if you were feeding a new life—all beneath one of the most spectacular star-lit skies of the northeast—such experiences offer adventure, but also teachings that are rarely found in a classroom.
You will journey through the Hero’s Journey program of initiatory games and challenges, vision questing, truth councils and artistic expressions—sometimes traveling alone, sometimes with your peer group and sometimes alongside the community of older men. We will all learn from the breakthroughs, mistakes and natural wisdom of one another.
Due to the rustic and isolated nature of our basecamp location, cell phone service and internet connection is not available, and external distractions are kept to a bare minimum. This separation from familiar modes of contact may be difficult at first, but you may soon find that this is just the break you need in order to get closer to the texts and tweets coming from your soul.
We hesitate to advertise all that we will offer so as to keep the element of adventure alive for the week. Please do not hesitate to inquire about specific details that you feel would be necessary to your consideration of enrollment.
The Young Men’s Journey is facilitated by Chris Royer in collaboration with the collective Hero’s Journey Facilitation Staff.
